Complete guide: gyms and training in the Campo Grande area

Bruno Salgueiro · · 5 min read

If you live or work in Campo Grande, Alvalade or near Cidade Universitária, you have a more varied training offer than it looks at first sight. Picking the wrong place, however, is the most common reason people drop out within two months.

This guide doesn’t name competitors. It lays out categories, criteria and the questions worth asking before signing any contract. At the end, I explain what we do at Be Water so you can compare with any other option in the area.

Location and consistency

Consistency is the single biggest factor in any training result, above the plan, the equipment and even the coach. And consistency’s worst enemy is friction. Every extra minute between you and the gym becomes a potential excuse on a Tuesday night when you’re tired.

The pattern we see again and again: people who train within 15 minutes of home or work keep the routine. People who train 30 minutes away or more almost always drop out within three months. It isn’t lack of willpower, it’s geography. So picking a gym close by is a heavily underrated decision.

If you live in Campo Grande, Alvalade or move around Cidade Universitária, the local offer covers every format.

The training offer in the area

Without naming names, but to give you a map, the offer falls into four broad categories.

Low-cost chains: low monthly fees, large facilities, machines in quantity. A “self-service” model: you walk in, train, walk out. Little or no technical guidance. Works if you already know what you’re doing and just want the equipment. Doesn’t work if you’re a beginner and want orientation.

Independent neighbourhood gyms: smaller, family atmosphere, mid-range price. Generally focused on classic weight training and a few group classes. Good for those who value human proximity and a simple workout.

Functional or CrossFit boutiques: small group classes, coach present in every session, structured programming. Higher price. Solid technical quality, but a single format.

Martial arts spaces: usually specialised in one modality (BJJ only, boxing only, or Muay Thai only). Excellent technical depth in a specific art. The cost of wanting variety is signing up at several different places.

Each category makes sense for a specific profile. Many people sign up without understanding which one they’re walking into.

Five questions before signing

Before any contract, ask these five questions. They tell you quickly what is real and what is marketing.

  1. Schedule and flexibility. Do the class times fit your real routine? Are there classes early in the morning and at the end of the day? How many times a week can you train? If you can only train 7pm to 9pm and there’s only one class in that window, you’ll clash with the gym.
  2. Class size and coach attention. Classes with 30 people and a coach shouting from a stage aren’t training, they’re group entertainment. Ask how many people each class has and whether the coach corrects you individually. Small groups with real correction are a precondition for progress.
  3. Coach qualifications. Who teaches the classes? What background do they have? How long have they been training? Qualified coaches don’t fear the question. Improvised ones do.
  4. Real facilities. Decent changing rooms, equipment in working order, ventilation, space to actually move. Visit the gym at the time you’d train, not at an empty hour. See what’s real, not what’s marketing.
  5. Lock-in and contract terms. How long do they tie you down? If you decide to leave in three months, how much does it cost? Good places don’t need to lock you in. If the contract demands 12 months, organic retention isn’t good enough.

What we do at Be Water

We’re at Av. do Brasil 7, in Campo Grande. We run as a multi-modality club: we combine functional training and martial arts in a single plan. In the area, we’re the only option with this format.

In concrete terms, what’s available:

  • Functional training with structured programming (strength, conditioning, mobility) in small groups
  • Jiu-Jitsu GI and No-Gi with Master Alexandre Izidro, 6th degree black belt
  • Muay Thai and Kickboxing with Diogo Calado and Rui Carvalho, world and European champions
  • Boxing with Arménio Reis, 6x national champion
  • Lounge and co-working area to stay after training

All on the same plan, no lock-in. Memberships from €64.90/month (2x a week) up to unlimited access at €94.90/month.

We’re not the cheapest option in the area, and we don’t want to be. We sit on the opposite side: technique, community and variety in a single space. For people who only want machines and the lowest price, there are low-cost options 5 minutes away.

How to get here

We’re well served by public transport:

  • 10 minutes on foot from Metro Campo Grande (yellow and green lines)
  • 5 minutes on foot from the main bus routes serving Alvalade, Cidade Universitária and Entrecampos
  • EMEL parking at the back of the building, with spots almost always available outside peak hours
  • A cycle path with direct access, useful for those coming from Telheiras, Lumiar or Entrecampos
  • 8 minutes on foot from Hospital de Santa Maria, the University of Lisbon’s main building and the main university campuses

For people who work in the area, training on a lunch break is realistic. For those who live nearby, walking in works. The commute is minimal.
