Boxing in Lisbon — The Noble Sport in the Heart of Lisbon

Boxing is the most practised combat sport in the world and one of the greatest laboratories for physical and technical development. Called "the sweet science" for the precision, timing and intelligence it requires, Boxing is much more than brute force.

At Be Water Lisbon, Boxing classes are led by Arménio Reis — boxer, certified Physical Exercise Technician and member of the Portugal National Team (6x National Champion, 2x WBC Amateur Champion). An environment that welcomes both beginners who have never put on gloves and experienced athletes looking to elevate their level.

Real Boxing — What we learn at Be Water

There's a fundamental difference between a "fitness boxing" workout and learning real Boxing. At Be Water, we teach real Boxing — with correct mechanics, footwork, distance and timing.

Stance and guard

The foundation of everything. A correct stance protects you, generates power and allows you to move. We work on guard individually from day one.

Fundamental punches

Jab, cross, hook and uppercut, each with specific mechanics that maximise power and minimise exposure.

Footwork

What separates a good boxer from an excellent one. Learning to move your feet correctly is the basis of all offensive and defensive strategy.

Defence

Slip, roll, parry, cover. Boxing isn't just about attacking — it's about not getting hit. Defensive techniques are worked from the very first classes.

Combinations

As fundamentals consolidate, we work combinations of 2 to 5 punches with fluid transitions between attack and defence.

Bag work

Heavy bags for power, speed bags for timing and fast hands, double-end bag for precision and distance.

Pad Work

With the coach or in pairs, pad work recreates real combat patterns and is where technique consolidates under some pressure.

What Boxing develops in your body

Boxing is one of the most complete workouts there is — it works practically every system in the body simultaneously.

Cardiovascular conditioning

Boxing is high-intensity interval training in its most natural form. Your cardiovascular system adapts quickly.

Power and explosiveness

Punches in Boxing generate power from the legs, hips and core — not the arms. You develop muscular explosiveness in a functional way.

Coordination and timing

Hitting a moving target with precision requires a level of hand-eye coordination that few sports develop with this intensity.

Core and balance

All Boxing mechanics pass through the core. A Boxing class is a core workout disguised as a martial art.

Mental toughness

Training Boxing teaches you to maintain technique when tired, manage pressure and make quick decisions. It's mental training as much as physical.

Who is Boxing at Be Water Lisbon for

For everyone. Boxing has one of the gentlest entry curves among martial arts — there's no ground fighting, no complex clinch, no kicks to learn. You put on gloves and start.

It's particularly suited for those who want an intense physical workout with a technical component, those who want to learn effective self-defence, athletes wanting to add conditioning and footwork to their main sport, and people who have never done martial arts and want to start with something accessible and immediately rewarding.

You don't need to want to compete — the vast majority of Boxing practitioners never step into a ring and benefit enormously from training.

Frequently Asked Questions about Boxing in Lisbon

What equipment do I need to start?

For the first trial class, you don't need anything — we lend gloves if necessary. For regular training, you'll need gloves (10-12 oz for bags, 14-16 oz for sparring) and wraps or inner gloves. A mouth guard is recommended once you start sparring. Our staff will help you choose.

Do classes include fighting with another person?

Sparring is not mandatory and is only introduced when you're technically and physically prepared — which usually takes a few months. Most classes include bags, pad work and technical exercises. When sparring contact happens, it's always controlled and supervised.

Is it good for self-defence?

Boxing is one of the most practical self-defence systems that exist — the strikes are natural, direct and effective. For a complete self-defence base, complementing with Jiu-Jitsu (which covers ground combat) is ideal.

Can I do Boxing if I've never practised any martial art?

Yes — it's actually the ideal entry point. Learning is progressive and the staff adapts classes to your level. Many of our practitioners started without any martial arts background.
